An Experienced Coastal Angler
Terry Atamian – Sport Fishing
Welcome to Terry Atamian’s Sport Fishing and Boating Blog. This site will feature interesting posts about both topics as well as include fishing and boating expeditions that Terry participates in.
Terry has spent a good part of his life on the water and is a highly accomplished and skilled boats man and fisherman.
House Float is Created
The concept that Terry Atamian and his friend Ky Dewan originally came up with was simple: build a float they could use to put their tackle together while they waited for the tide to turn at their favorite fishing spot at Great Harbor in Woods Hole. That was 16 years, 2 renovations and 3 levels ago. That float turned out to be merely the foundation for what is today Terry Atamian’s own “castle on the water,” an eye-catching “house float” that is an angler’s dream.
Terry has been a landmark in the town for almost 50 years. “I’ve lived in Falmouth in the same house my whole life and fished the waters around Woods Hole since I could walk,” says Terry. “The idea of having a float built made sense, but I never could have guessed what it would become. I’ve made two major renovations to our original idea. The float is now 3 stories high and measures 46 long by 25 wide—about the size of your average split-level home in the suburbs. Ky and I named it Moonshadow.
We have a community of over 15 similar structures in the Harbor, and I believe there is nothing else like these anywhere.
“We have access to all that Woods Hole offers and a deep water harbor that never gets rough. My house float has running water, a wood stove, solar panel and a wind generator. You stand over 18 feet off the water when you are on my third story, and you can enjoy the views of Martha’s Vineyard, the bridges of the Cape Cod Canal and beyond.” And the fishing? It’s to die for, says Terry. “You name it, and chances are myself and members of our house float community have caught it off Moonshadow—False Albacore, Atlantic Bonito, Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Triggerfish, Sea Robins, Bluefish, Flounder, Sand Sharks, Weakfish, Tautog, Fluke, Scup, and of course Striped Bass. “Fishing has always been a big part of my life, not just recreational, but also on behalf of charitable and community causes. I’ve fished many tournaments to benefit causes, such as the Redbone Series on behalf of Cystic Fibrosis, and, for over 20 years, the John Havlicek Celebrity Fishing Tournament to benefit the Genesis Fund. “Living on the water is so much different than a water view or waterfront home. You’re floating all the time. In the winter we all go under a draw bridge to the protection of Eel Pond in Woods Hole. When the weather turns bad, my house float is a great spot to tie up to. I even gave my closest friends keys to it as Christmas presents a few years back so that when they’re out there in their boats, they know they’re always welcome on the Moonshadow. But more than anything else, it’s the sense of community. I’ve made friends with people just stopping by. Boats will stop by and tie up all day. “It’s a healthy and hearty lifestyle that I wouldn’t give up for anything.”
